This recipe covers 7% of your daily requirements of vitamins and minerals. A mixture of cheddar cheese, pepper, green onions, and a handful of other ingredients are all it takes to make this recipe so flavorful. It works well as a Southern breakfast. From preparation to the plate, this recipe takes about 50 minutes.
Instructions
In a large saucepan, bring water to a boil.
Add grits; cook and stir over medium heat for 5 minutes or until thickened.
In a small bowl, whisk egg whites and eggs. Stir a small amount of hot grits into eggs; return all to the pan, stirring constantly. Stir in the cheese, milk, jalapenos, garlic salt, pepper and half of the onions.
Transfer to a 2-qt. baking dish coated with cooking spray.
Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
Sprinkle with remaining onions.
Recommended wine: Riesling, Sparkling Wine, Zinfandel
Riesling, Sparkling Wine, and Zinfandel are my top picks for Grits. In general, there are a few rules that will help you pair wine with southern food. Food-friendly riesling or sparkling white wine will work with many fried foods, while zinfandel is great with barbecued fare. The Westport Winery "Ancient Mariner" Riesling & Pear wine blend (Benefits Coastal Animal Rescue and Adoption) with a 5 out of 5 star rating seems like a good match. It costs about 27 dollars per bottle.
